** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg
+
+ NOTE: there is a gnome-panel trace attached, but it's of no use. I
+ right-clicked on the panel and selected 'file a bug', so I suppose
+ that's the reason

I have an Acer Aspire 1692 laptop, with an integrated ATI mobile
graphics card. Most hardware works well, but with the livecd, and after
installation, xorg is broken and only shows a black screen. I can hear
the startup sound, but no video.

I investigated a little bit and found that I had to add the following
  option to xorg.conf:

  "Option" "MonitorLayout" "LVDS"

After that, a restart on gdm makes xorg work perfectly.

I am filling this bugreport to ask if this can be done automatically at
the hardware detection phase. Thanks a lot!
