Public bug reported:
Is was doing an online update from a mixed (KDE/GNONE) kubuntu 9.04 to
kubuntu 9.10 beta1. The update went well and after the installation i
was rebooting the system.
System was properly starting up: BIOS->GRUB->Splash and then it was just
sitting in a black screen forever.
Same on every reboot.
I rebooted the system in text mode (removed quit und splash from GRUB).
There i could see that after some point the screen was constantly
flickering (graphic modes where switched).
I rebooted again this time in rescue mode. I replaced my
/etc/X/xorg.conf with the /etc/X/xorg.conf.failsafe and was now able to
start X.
The problem is that before the update my system was using the NVIDIA drivers
(which was reflected in my xorg.conf). The update was not installing the
updated driver and was also not changing the xorg.conf.
-> result: x was broken after the update.
