One other major issue during upgrade has been the selection of xorg related drivers. It would be nice if the installer could fall back to plain VESA if everything else does not work out.
For me in this particular case it was the trident driver which did not work no matter what. Created random garbage on the display and locked up the system. Only remedy for that is the reset button. The ati driver was also chosen due to its FireGL support I presume. The fbdev support caused trouble as well. So I ended up removing drivers for fbdev, ati and trident and changed xorg.conf for VESA only hence X came up ok. Requested /var/log/dist-upgrade log files attached. Hope it helps.
