There was an update to 2.6.31-14 today, although I still had the issue afterwards. I think xserver-xorg-core also updated itself.
I applied some more updates, then purged and reinstalled grub2, and rebooted. Now I no longer get the screen corruption - but instead I just get a flashing cursor and no login. ps shows all the tty consoles are running, though.
