I'll re-iterate what Alexander said...

Please re-install Beta, and then upgrade to the latest versions.   Then,
if you're still having the same problem, run the following command from
a terminal:

apport-collect 445550

...this will add log files and other debugging information that can help
us track down the bug.

Also, please do this *before* you start removing packages with Synaptics
and/or messing around with /etc/network/interfaces.  The bug you've
reported is against the network-manager package, yet you've told us that
you've partially removed network-manager and a few other packages.

Wired Ethernet does work for most people running Karmic now, although we
are tracking down a problem with upgrade which involves the IPv6
configuration being set to Automatic, instead of Ignore for Wired
connections.   I would ask that you check this setting ( Edit
Connections -> Wired Tab, select interface and click Edit, click IPv6
tab ).
