update: - booting without "splash quiet" gives me working ttys, but system still hangs after logout showing blank screen - first one or two times I can log out successfully without freezing notebook if I choose "performance" profile in cpu scaling monitor (applies to both - splash and no splash boot up condition). I am not entirely sure why or if it's actually dependant on how much time has passed after login.
