Cannot reproduce on a new installation of Karmic. Log filed loaded fine.

1. have you tried opening the file manually to verify it isn't corrupt?
2. Does this happen on a new installation of the beta?
3. Can you please indicate what the permissions are on the file
/var/log/messages?
sudo ls -l /var/log/messages should provide you with that information.
