Strange... I am actually noticing that even an
ifconfig eth0 down followed by an ifconfig eth0 up kills my card. After this sequence eththool -t reports FAIL, no link. If I unplug the ethernet cable and replug it, the card starts working again. So it might not be network-manager to be completely to blame in the end, but probably the network card (broadcom NetXtreme BCM5752) or its drivers.
