I think the problem is that Ubuntu 9.10 uses both xsplash and usplash. This is
where the confusion has come from.
XSplash is the 'new' horizontal scrolling ubuntu logo, just before the login
screen.
USplash just shows the white ubuntu logo, which you might see at shutdown (it
can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m64J8L4FdXo )
So all you have to do is enable USplash to start at bootup?
