Just for comparison, I myself also have a system with the same wifi card
and driver using the latest 2.6.31-14 kernel and it's detecting and
connecting to wifi networks just fine.
It seems from the kernel's perspective the driver is loading as expected
based on your dmesg output:

have the kill switch enabled:
