Following andbelo's advice I installed gnome-alsamixer. The rec box under capture was already checked, but the microphone still does not work. Under Sound-Preferences ->tab input I increased input volume from 'unamplfied' all the way to max, but still no sound. All mute boxes are of course unchecked.
