I had this problem too, looked at dmesg and the important line for me was
[ 8566.396547] Error: Driver 'rt2870' is already registered, aborting...
after it had mentioned trying to use rt3070sta. To be honest I had never done
anything with dmesg before and had no idea what I was doing, but I added the
lines
blacklist rt2800usb
blacklist rt2870sta
to my /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and after a reboot it works fine when I
plug it in.
