I also see this bug. In addition to the icons being garbled, the in- program menus are similarly unintelligible. For instance, if you wish to change your "location", bringing up the location window presents you with a box that is unreadable.
I had some problems with flickering and artifacts with Stellarium in the past and turning off Compiz (by simply setting "Desktop Effects" to "none") would clear that up. This bug happens with "Desktop Effects" set to either "none" or "normal", it makes no difference (I did not try "high".)
