I don't know specifically about the z42, but I know that the drivers for the lexmark z52/z53 are broken in Dapper. That was fixed in Edgy 6.10: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gutenprint/+bug/6627
I would guess that possibly you have the same problem than in that bug report.
