I know this really shouldn't in bug report but by turning bell mode to off (gconf-editor /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode) and disable the system bell through the "CompizConfig Settings Manager" under the General->General Options->General tab, uncheck "Audible Bell" seems to have helped as suggested in bug #282906. I also had to disable terminal bell in profile preferences in the terminal. Dam pc beep in alsamixer keeps coming back on though.
