If you attempt to remove evolution or totem or a number of other
programs, the reverse dependency check kicks in and removes some
essential packages including (down the reverse dependency tree) gnome
and Ubuntu-desktop, the removal of Ubuntu-desktop as i understand it
will remove the auto updating feature if new standard desktop programs
are changed. There are a lot of Ubuntu and non Ubuntu forums out there
with people asking how to remove totem and evolution the answer they
are always given is to just remove them from their panel menus. if i
manual override the reverse dependency checking and remove evolution and
totem then update notifier and synaptic cease to function because it
breaks the package database.

I have found this same situation to be true of many programs that come
bundled with Ubuntu if you attempt to remove a program that you don't
use or like.

I am not attempting to be rude or cocky, but absolutely serious on the
base of this issue and i do consider it to be a bug. If you attempt to
remove all windows media player, outlook express and internet explorer
features from windows your left with an unusable operating system. If
you remove totem and evolution from Ubuntu and then run apt-get auto
remove your left with about the same thing.

These issues lead me to believe that although Ubuntu is an extremely
easy and full featured linux OS that has caused many windows users to
switch, it is seeming to inherit some of the basic flaws.

I am coming from 9 years of Slackware where if you want a program you
find the source and start compiling dependencies, I know have a lot less
time to create my own linux OS and have begun to enjoy the flexibility
ease of use and absolutely insane development team Ubuntu uses.

Any input you can give on this topic is greatly appreciated.

It seems the openoffice.org-evolution bug was fixed and i can now remove
that without removing the core of openoffice.
