And then I get a ttyl prompt to login into a terminal. 'sudo gdm' says something about GDM already running, aborting. 'startx' shows the X errors: VESA(0): no valid modes Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration Fatal server error: no screens found I reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.7.1-0ubuntu1~xup~1 using wget and dpkg -i, sudo reboot, and everything worked normally, booted into the desktop no problem.
