Public bug reported:

Since doing a fresh install of Karmic, sound has been working well on my
SB Audigy card and my microphone and speakers were easy to set up.
However, the microphone (Input) volume at 100% is often too soft. I
have to boost the level to the "max volume" for it to be adequate.
However, every time I restart my machine, the Input volume goes back to
100% and not the "max volume". I haven't checked this with Output
volume or anything else. It may be present there, maybe not. I also
haven't tried checking whether Input volume "sticks" if the volume is
set below 100% as opposed to above.

Please let me know what more information I can provide.
