Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Sound works, but Pulseaudio doesn't report any audio streams. Neither in
pavucontrol or gnome-volume-control any audio streams are detected, and
changes in the volume rocker doesn't change the actual volume.

Alsamicer changes the volume, and music is playing with Rhythmbox and
other sound sources.

The volume-keys in my keyboard worked in Karmic a whilie ago, but now it
seems to go via pulseaudio so it doesnät work any more. Now I must
adjust the volume on the actual speaker, which seriously lacks any kind
of compiz effects.
