The problem seems to be related to libflash-mozplugin *not* flashplugin-nonfree.
What I did to reproduce: sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree/edgy-backports Result: firefox worked without problem three times sudo apt-get install libflash-mozplugin Result: firefox worked without problem three times sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree Result: firefox is crashing each time sudo apt-get remove libflash-mozplugin Result: firefox worked without problem three times (but without flash) Some Notes: I started firefox using path /usr/lib/firefox/firefox this time, because my symlink /usr/bin/firefox is diverted. I restored /etc/firefox/firefoxrc to normal. I used an extra user account (unchanged) with gnome for testing.
