Despite the Live CD for Karmic easily detecting all of my hardware in
the Jockey hardware drivers installer, after an actual fresh install,
jockey does NOT detect my hardware at all. Instead I get a blank window
that insists that "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."
Only after I install the package bcmwl-modaliases does it decide that my
hardware exists. I had to reinstall bcmwl-modaliases (and I also
installed bcmwl-kernel-source with my laptop plugged into an ethernet
cable) just to get wireless working.
This issue is a regression - in Jaunty, during a Live CD session
wireless worked and was enabled by default. After a fresh install, it
also still worked and was enabled by default. Now in Karmic, it only
recommends that it be installed when running off the Live CD (though it
IS still usable while running the Live CD, if you ignore jockey's
demands to reboot), and after an actual installation it doesn't even
detect anything until I install the aforementioned packages.
