I suspect this extension is special because it contains a binary shared
object with C source, and the new version firefox has different ABI than
the one it is compiled against.

I don't know whether you have any "supported extension" that has shared
object inside. Even if there is none, if the problem is not restricted
to this particularly extension but a more general problem, I think it
still worths further investigation.
