I also have the same problem with the Ubuntu 6.06 live CD, an LG L1730S
and a graphics card detected as a Radeon R200 QL (not sure about this)

On boot the resolution selected is 640 by 480 and the screen resolution
utility does not let me change it from this.

I resolved this as follows:

 * Press Ctrl - Alt - F1 to switch to a text mode shell.
 * Type sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg - the default settings worked for me.
 * Press Ctl - Alt- F7 to return to graphics mode
 * Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to reboot the xserver.
