When did Ubuntu change this? I remember for sure that a few releases
ago, turning off the backlight using the notebook's "blank screen" or
"lock screen" (you know, the screen icon with the X ;) ) button worked.
After one upgrade it didn't anymore. I didn't research the matter enough
back then, but I remember that there was a script that called xset. Like
in Jaunty, /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank does.

IMHO, having to wait for a timeout to save battery doesn't make much
sense to me since in Windows, the said button does exactly what it says:
lock *and* turn off backlight.

(Which script is executed when pressing the thinkpad blank screen key?
I'd love to "fix" this for myself if I knew the script -- if my point
isn't consistent to you.)
