Thanks - I'm embroiled in a couple other tasks right now, so I'll try
this by the morning Swiss time. :) I did find gconf-editor - I noticed
it didn't show xscreensaver, which is installed, but rather
gnome-screensaver. Should I install the gnome version instead?

Yes, I do interact with a openchrome expert who's in Poland, I
believe, from time to time. So when I can reproduce some of this again
I'll file an appropriate bug.

Ah, it's my fate to own a worst-case laptop!

It's completely normal that you lose data on "Windows" platforms.
That's why you have a UNIX server for backups.
