Well during 8.04 Intel pushed heavily to have special compile flags 
added just for new Atom based CPUs. This is what lpia is, it's x86 but 
with some special instructions that where supposed to just be in Atom 
based CPUs. This apparently did not pan out and the speed benefit was 
not seen.

So since Ubuntu Netbook Remix was targeted for Atom based CPUs. The 
first version (maybe even 9.04) used lpia. With lack of clear  benefit 
and  consequences ,with issues such as this, is why the I hear things 
have moved back to just being i386 for UNR 9.10 (maybe 9.04 .. need to 
verify that).
