Can you try to update your system and then re-test?
I was able to get this to work this evening with the latest versions of
network-manager & the -applet:
network-manager 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1
network-manager-gnome 0.8~a~git.20091014t134532.4033e62-0ubuntu1
Once you've updated, if you still are experiencing the same problem,
please attach the files found in:
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections
It also would be helpful to attach the following commands:
% ifconfig eth0
% route
% cat /etc/resolv.conf
Also, I've found that's possible for the Gateway value to be set
incorrectly, and sometimes to get blanked out, yet the editor still
allows it to be saved. In this case, it gets saved as 0.0.0.0, which in
turn causes the connection to seem like it's connected yet you can't
actually reach the 'net.
