The problem has been resolved. When I was downloading some updates there was
a glitch of some kind. I re-installed Jaunty, downloaded all available
upgrades, and restored by home folder. I also upgraded the system to ext 4
and grub 2.

I tried to beta version of Karmic. I liked it. I'm looking forward to using
the production release next week.
