gdb backtrace with the new kernel attached (this one was a hang, after which it would restart normally).
My Firefox is the Ubuntu 6.10 default (2.0.0.1) with all security updates; the only non-default plugin I have is RealPlayer and the problem started before I installed that. As indicated above, I now strongly suspect that this isn't really a Firefox problem at all, since other applications also sometimes crash.
