I get this as well, however, I only get it if I try to set the option
-ss beyond 2196.

Here's the complete command I use, which encodes it into something my PDA with 
TCPMP can handle:
mencoder dvd:// -alang en -oac mp3lame -ovc xvid -vf scale=320:-2 -o /dev/null 
-xvidencopts pass=1

I also get complete kernel crashes if I let it run all the way through and if I 
use crop, like so:
-vf scale=320:-2,crop=320:128:0:26

I think the above crop command is used the wrong way, but I'm not sure.
