Currently I have been able to "fix" the 5.1 sound when playing a DVD for
most players. I've got two soundcards: an internal card and the Audigy 2
ZS. Disabling the internal soundcard in the BIOS solves most of the 5.1
playback problems.

The current situation for these players is the following:

mplayer: correct 5.1 playback with 6 channels specified
VLC: correct 5.1 playback when selecting 5.1 as "audio device" in the menu
gxine: correct 5.1 playback, but the sound cracks somehow
totem(-gstreamer): no 5.1 playback, only stereo sound is played, although
"5.1-channel" is selected as output type

I assume that the use of two soundcards caused most of the problems I
had. Totem however still doesn't output 5.1 sound properly.

I also tried "mplayer -af
channels=nch[:nr:from1:to1:from2:to2:from3:to3:from4:to4:from5:to5:from6:to6]
dvd://" but this gives an error. I'm not sure this command is right,
I've never used such audio filters. Also this wasn't really necessary,
because mplayer already plays 5.1 sound correctly now.

I am now using Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy), which has ALSA v. 1.0.12rc1
I'm willing to do further tests to fix the problems with gxine and totem. I
could also enable my internal soundcard to try other solutions.
