I have a similar problem.
Setup:
- Laptop Toshiba Satellite M100-222.
- Ubuntu 9.10 with latest updates.
- Laptop display is turned off.
- Attached monitor 1280x1024.
Notifications appear too far down the screen - as if it's below a non-
existent notification. Volume change appears in the expected position,
directly below the panel. See attached screenshot.
