Upgrading to the latest mainline release v2.6.31.5 and v2.6.32-rc5 did not help. The additional boot parameters noapic all_generic_ide (as suggested in some forum entries) did not work.
I suppose my Elitegroup K7VZA mainboard / Pioneer DVD-105S causes issues systematic issues. It used to be a very cheap mainboard.
