Sorry, I misdiagnosed the problem. I guess the problem is that the error message is not helpful--it says "dynamic DNS service update utility not in use" (implying to me simply that the daemon is not running--I would assume that's why I'm telling it to "start" in the first place). The message might be more helpfuliif it said something like "To run ddclient as a daemon, please set $run_daemon to 'true' in /etc/default/ddclient".
