It's working for me now, but in a strange kind of way. When I have the http proxy set then I cannot connect to the exchange server. When I turn the http proxy off, then I can. So at work I have to toggle the proxy on to surf the internet through our firewall, and toggle it back off in order to read email. This happens both with configuring firefox using its preferences menu to no proxy/manual/automatic proxy config url, or when the preference is set to "system proxy settings" and I use gconf to set the http proxy.
