I also have the ALC889A on my motherboard and am having the same problem with the 9.10 RC. Absolutely no sound from anything from any ports on my board. I even threw in a sound-blaster card from my previous setup and re-installed and no sound from it either.
aplay -l shows both devices, alsamixer and also the xfce mixer show all of the outputs as being enabled and with the volume up. The system volume is also up.
