I tried the brightness applet workaround, and it worked.
Then, I clicked on the brightness applet, but then I increased the brightness
with the keyboard, and no trouble occurred. I also noticed that the brightness
slider prevented the brightness osd from showing up.
This made me question if the trouble wasn't related to the osd, rather than to
the power manager.
So I tried to click on the network-manager icon and then change the brightness
while the network selection popup was showing. This prevented again the
brightness osd from showing up, and, again, no troubles occurred.
The same with every icon on the top panel that prevents the brightness osd from
showing up.
