Same problem for me. However, i get sound output every time, if I 1. Start Ubuntu 2. plug in a pair of headphones 3. Rightclick on the volume-icon top-right and choose Sound settings 4. Go to the Output-tab 5. Choose Analog Headphones 6. Choose Analog Output again
Strangely this produces sound in the built-in speakers.
