Then I retried the upgrade on a copy of the system,
using 'update-notifier-kde -d'
-> the crash occured again!

The crash reporting assistant says:
Application: KdeSudo (kdesudo), signal: Segmentation fault
[Current thread is 0 (process 6756)]

Another interesting detail:
$ ps aux | grep dp
root       722  0.1  0.3   8980  6472 pts/4    Ss+  11:38   0:00 /usr/bin/dpkg 
--force-overwrite --status-fd 18 --configure bash
