Hi Scott, I have forgotten to mention that the problem was easily reproducible when home directories were on a reiserfs partition. After converting reiserfs to ext4 the problem went away. Please find the old /etc/fstab attached.
The home directories of users are on /uuu (this host was running previously Ubuntu/Hardy). I have installed Karmic on /dev/sda3 and reused the already existing FS with users' home directories. When booting the host, mountall reports several times in the splash screen "waiting for /dev/sda7", "cannot yet be mounted". Then KDM starts and logs in the predefined user without any delay. At this moment /uuu is still not mounted and it cannot access the users's home directory. I remember bug 432620, this is somewhat similar as it is triggered by those FS that need loading modules.
