The support is not really experimental anymore, it works quite fine with
most Radeon 9500 - X800 cards (not the top performance of course, but
otherwise). The "experimental"-tag was recently removed from the
development version, as it was basically forgotten there even though
most important bugs have been fixed.

My guess would be that the fglrx still wasn't removed properly -
installing fglrx breaks the open source 3D acceleration completely, but
that dpkg-divert should tell you perhaps something. Try also
reinstalling the package libgl1-mesa-glx.

As a last resort, you could try running
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-4/ live cd, 3D should
work out-of-the-box, though probably you are still going to hit the
auto-detection problem of mobility x700, ie. that you have to specify
"radeon" driver... possibly going to be fixed soon in daily images.
