Just to update:
I installed the AMD64 version on the same machine, and the problem persists 
with the up to date system.
Aside from the 3 minute lag on boot, the nvidia proprietary drivers would only 
show me a black screen, from which I was unable to recover the system. Even 
with remote ssh, I couldn't kill the X process (kill -9 would not respond).
Booting with acpi=off the problem disappears and the nvidia driver works fine.
Please let me know if there's anything else I can do.
