Actually, using the hardware button I have a different problem.
1) Insert CD, check that it's mounted and usable.
2) press hardware eject button. CD is ejected but not unmounted. CD icon still
on Gnome desktop
$ mount | grep sr0
/dev/sr0 on /media/cdrom0 type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,user=rose)
3) press hardware button again to insert CD, CD does not mount, many of the
following errors in dmesg
[ 915.023548] VFS: busy inodes on changed media or resized disk sr0
So the hardware button ejects the CD but does not unmount it.
