My fstab is:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'vol_id --uuid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# / was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=d1adabde-e223-4a18-a57d-d9ddf4c9be27 /               ext3
relatime,errors=remount-ro,commit=600 0       1
# swap was on /dev/sda6 during installation
UUID=d683b105-9246-4434-9c9b-309ccd9a7634 none            swap    sw

My authorizations screenshot is attached. It appears to be identical to
the example you posted.

The permissions at startup on the drive are:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2009-10-23 13:33 /dev/scd0 -> sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2009-10-23 13:33 /dev/sr0

I have double-checked that the normal user account is in the cdrom
group.

Just to be sure there is no confusion, the drive *reads* just fine.
Attempting to burn a CD-R, however, either audio, or data, fails with a
string of errors that I can't quite manage to wrap my head around,
unless I have altered the drive's permissions, in which case it works
flawlessly. What program I try to use to burn the disk makes no
difference. I can post an error log if that would be helpful.
