Sorry I wasn't very carefully in this specific case. It was actually testing, if may be something changed with the above described bug and we could switch from windows to ubuntu. But what I mentioned generally the problem is absolutely reproducible. In case, when I have any of fglrx driver (installed from ubuntu menu, from ATI may be with all settings described on internet :-)), any attempt of switching user results with crash (black screen and no reaction to anything else except hard reset button). I can suspend both to memory and disk and resume, I can logout and login. Crash takes effect regardless I am logged in and use the menu switch user or when I lock my session and try to switch user from login menu. If I can test anything and help you move ahead with the problem, please let me know.
