Does it actually freeze when you switch to a tty, if it's the problem I
am thinking of you can still ctrl+alt+f7 back into the gdm. This is a
pretty common problem dealing with usplash (see bug #63558). I won't
mark it a duplicate just yet but please check it out and let me know if
it's related.
