Confirmed for the kubuntu 9.10 release ISO. I set ubiquity to install grub on /dev/sda6, as i had it already on my MBR(regular ubuntu 9.10 install). However, the mbr was still overwritten.
I fixed it by booting my regular ubuntu and did a "grub-install". But an installer should do as it's told. I haven't tried installing an older ubuntu version to see if the bug is present there(according to Sam Tygier it appears so). Setting the partition(or disk) for grub is off course not for your average joe, but this is quite a bug in the installer.
