The problem is solved. It wasn't really iputils-tracepath that was the problem, it was the dependency to traceroute. I discovered this message that must remain from a restore earlier this year:
update-alternatives: error: the alternative link /usr/bin/traceroute6 is already handled by traceroute6.before_restore_2009-03-02_22.32.44.435893 I tried moving that file to a temporary folder and reran the upgrade process and it worked perfectly, no errors at all, the packages telepathy-butterfly, traceroute and ubuntu-desktop was now configured without any problems as well.
