Same error on my Dell Latitude e6500 (amd64, 1440x900 res) after
upgrading to Karmic.

I get the following message on a flickering screen:

usplash: Setting mode 1152x864 failedb-42e9-9e05-4793f9571f63
usplash: Using mode 1024x768

After a few seconds a login prompt comes up on the same screen, but it
doesn't accept every keystroke, so entering my password (where no
characters or asterisks are displayed) is impossible.
