With the information others provided I and a bit of searching I have another
work-around. I have rebuilt the ubuntu stock Karmic kernel with one config
change, setting:

CONFIG_MMC_UNSAFE_RESUME=y

My acer aspire one now suspend and resume with no problems (although
bluetooth doesn't get suspended, but that can be fixed with an update to
pm-utils).

I hope this change can get roled (back) into the main-line ubuntu kernel
and/or the suspend issue is fixed without needing the kernel config option
changing.
